LED
LED backlight models from their traditional LCD counterparts in that they are backlight with LEDs (light emitting diode) instead of CCFLs. LED screens offer a broader color spectrum and most importantly-deeper blacks. There are two different methods of LED backlighting: direct (or local) and edge. The main advantage of direct lighting is that it can be used to increase contrast levels by turning some LEDs off - thus increasing the amount of black in parts of the picture. Edge-lighting's main advantage is that it makes for incredibly thin screens (2 inches or less) because the LEDs are at the side and not behind the screen. LED sets are more energy efficient than LCD and Plasma, though the Local Dimming models do consume more energy than edge light LED sets.
