Initially, I was a bit concerned about the plastic housing, but it turns out to be sturdy enough. The instructions failed to explain how to open it up (the corners pop outward), but once you figure it out, it's nice to not have to worry about screws. The hard drive will fit quite snugly, so it won't move around once installed. I worry about squishing the ribbon cable too much and causing the wires inside to break, but that seems to be OK. I installed a 40GB (7200 rpm) hard drive from my old computer, put the housing back together & plugged in the USB cable & power cable; Windows XP recognized it immediately, and it worked like a champ... still does. No need to use the installation CD if operating under WinXP. I recommend this item!

It's good for what you pay for, you get what you would expect, it's plastic, light, compact (as far as 3.5 drive enclosure goes), opening is tricky (slide off all 4 'metal' corners). The biggest problem, when a drive is installed the fan was hitting my drives (not very smart design), so I placed some pieces of matboard on the little plastic clips that hold up the drive, problem solved. Drives stay cool, cases are nice & work well, overall the enclosures are great.

Fan hits the drive

by Ahmad on 7/23/2008

As other reviewers noted the housing is very flimsy, the corners easily pop off. I attached an old drive from a dead computer and am copying the files to another drive. The fan started hitting the bottom of the drive and was quite loud, actually. I have not closed the top of the case so its lying open, and had to pull out the drive from the casing so it would stop hitting the fan. If I could find an adapter to plug ide cables to usb that would have worked just as well, all I need is to rescue old hard drives.
