100 Rifles (1969)

Editor's Note Reynolds stars as Indian Yaqui Joe, a man who robs a bank to buy guns for his oppressed people. Lawman Jim Brown follows him to Mexico where they are both held prisoner by a corrupt official. They become allies and after their escape, work for the Indians' fight for freedom and dignity.

Mexico, 1912. An Arizona lawman named Lyedecker travels to a remote village looking for Yaqui Joe, a half-Indian, half-white bank robber who's stolen $6,000 to buy rifles for his besieged brethren. His people are fighting the Mexican government, which has set out to annihilate them. But Lyedecker could care less. He wants the money returned to its rightful place -- a Phoenix bank within his jurisdiction -- and he'll stop at nothing to make sure that happens. Chicago Sun-Times 5 of 10
Even in the most routine Westerns, some sort of balance has to be struck between the shooting and the talking. Scenes of heroes and bad guys killing each other are all much alike. We watch for the official clichŽs like the guy who gets dragged by his horse, or the Indian crawling along the rooftop who is hit and throws his arms into the air, screaming "Aiiee" and all that. But unless a story has been introduced to make the shooting part of the plot, it can get pretty dreary. "100 Rifles" is pretty dreary...To compensate, Gries gives us lots of action.
