The way I see it, things happen on 145th street that don't happen anywhere else in the world. (from the first line)
This "Boston Globe-Horn Book" Honor Book is a wrenchingly honest collection of stories set on one block of 145th Street in Harlem. Readers get to know the oldest resident; the cop on the beat; fine Peaches and her girl, Squeezie; Monkeyman; Benny, a fighter on the way to a knockout; and other residents who jump off the page and pull readers into the mix on 1-4-5.
From the Publisher:
Ten stories portray life on a block in Harlem, sharing the lives of Peaches and her daughter Squeezie, Monkeyman, Mother Fletcher, Kitty, Billy, and Big Joe.
Author Bio
Walter Dean Myers
Walter Dean Myers's mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise eight children alone. When he was three, Walter was taken in by a nearby couple, Herbert and Florence Dean, who moved with him to Harlem, New York. A speech impediment contributed to his unhappy time in school, although he did love to read and write. When he was 16 he won a prize in an essay contest, which encouraged him to continue his writing although he eventually dropped out of school and joined the Army. Afterward, he held a series of jobs before becoming a full-time writer. His first book for children, WHERE DOES THE DAY GO?, was published in 1969 after it won a competition sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children. Myers has been awarded the Newbery Honor, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contributions to young adult literature.

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"As a whole, this is a model compilation of interconnected tales that are strong standing alone but stronger still standing together." - Janice M. Del Negro March 2000
