Performance

I had the pleasure and honor of playing Edward Rutledge from South Carolina in a local stage production of 1776. I had NO idea of the education I was going to get! I learned more about the formation of our country and the development of the Declaration of Independence from this movie than I did from school. The movie is well made, the characters are well played, the music is incredible! The major scene for Rutledge, which is preceded by a confrontation with Adams and, especially Jefferson, is dark and very moving. I still get chills when I remember it!

Inspirational, Well Performed, Moving Score

by Mark James on 5/1/2002

This is a surprising musical, I was expecting a boring lackluster movie using the Declaration of Independance as a backdrop. Instead, I found a well-written (book and score), well acted, well directed film that was moving (sometimes funny) that showed some of the issues and conflicts involved when brave men put their lives, fortunes and family in peril to declare a human state of freedom that the world had not seen. To stand up against a tyrant that would surely defeat their fledgling democracy. It was not a surprise this movie was made, only that it was made so well. Read More

Editors Note
Note This acclaimed film version of Peter Stone's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, which was one of the last big-budget studio musicals, stars William Daniels (TV's Saint Elsewhere) as John Adams and Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin. A rollicking, anachronistic treatment of the creation of the Declaration of Independence, with the American forefathers conducting themselves with uncharacterstic--and comical--indignity. Academy Award Nominations: Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling, Jr.)

Review A wonderfully happy meeting of our distinct American history with that pecularly American dramatic form: the musical comedy.
