Review 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is an abortion movie with a different perspective from the traditional melodrama or documentary. This production neither moralizes nor takes a side in the pro-life/pro-choice debate. In fact, this isn't about the issue at all (much as Knocked Up, in which abortion is quickly dismissed as an option, is not about it). In fact, by the time the story has begun, any agonizing about whether or not to have the procedure is long past (and has occurred off-screen). There is no doubt, nor is any introduced, that the abortion will take place. Instead, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is about the collateral damage incurred by those involved in obtaining a procedure that, in this time and place, is illegal and can carry a prison term of 5-10 years...Writer/director Cristian Mungiu has a unique style that contributes to the movie's almost claustrophobic sense of dread. The audience sees the film through the characters' eyes, often sensing danger where none may exist and missing signs of obvious peril...4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is an abortion movie where the pro-choice/pro-life struggle fades into the background to give way to a more visceral and less philosophical battle. Despite being slow and deliberate, it is often compelling and occasionally riveting.

Review Gabita is perhaps the most clueless young woman ever to have the lead in a movie about her own pregnancy. Even if you think "Juno" was way too clever, two hours with Gabita will have you buying a ticket to Bucharest for Diablo Cody. This is a powerful film and a stark visual accomplishment, but no thanks to Gabita (Laura Vasiliu). The driving character is her roommate Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), who does all the heavy lifting...The movie deliberately levels an unblinking gaze at its subjects. There are no fancy shots, no effects, no quick cuts, and Mungiu and his cinematographer, Oleg Mutu, adhere to a rule of one shot per scene. That makes camera placement and movement crucial, and suggests that every shot has been carefully prepared...The film has inspired many words about how it reflects Romanian society, but obtaining an illegal abortion was much the same in this country until some years ago, and also in Britain, as we saw in Leigh's "Vera Drake." The fascination of the film comes not so much from the experiences the friends have, however unspeakable, but in who they are, and how they behave and relate. Anamaria Marinca gives a masterful performance as Otilia, but don't let my description of Gabita blind you to the brilliance of Laura Vasiliu's acting. These are two of the more plausible characters I've seen in a while.

Quotes
Glenn Kenny, Premiere A remarkably engrossing and thoughtful picture. Beautifully rendered in an artful mode of realism.
Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader Masterful. Moving and gripping throughout. Impressive above all for the way it respects the audience.
Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times A power house...enough intensity to leave you gasping for air...this film's confidence, ambition and impact will take you by surprise and shake you up.
Manohla Dargis, The New York Times A triumph of aesthetic. A ferocious often brilliantly directed film...sensational and impeccably controlled.
Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune A masterwork. An odyssey you won't soon forget. Works powerfully as a drama and hasn't a polemical moment in its entirety.
Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle A masterpiece. First, this movie should be enjoyed. Later, marveled at...Mungiu creates scenes unlike any ever filmed.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone ...Marinca gives the kind of performance awards are made for. This is great acting - you can't shake it. The same goes for the filmmaking.
