|Here's the great secret about 90210: as a franchise, it has never, ever been hip, not even when the Flaming Lips played the Peach Pit. That was ironic, but there's not much irony to the new millennium revival of the series, something that's reflected in this very earnest 2009 soundtrack. Only Jet attempt a little bit of irony in their stumbling "One Hipster One Bullit," with the rest of the featured artists -- possible exception being the ultra-cool duo of N.E.R.D. and Santigold -- mining some kind of vein of sincerity, ranging from the Raconteurs' very serious thank-you revision of "Many Shades of Black" with Adele on vocals, to Sarah Solovay's cloyingly girly "Hearts Collide." There's a lot of room between those two extremes, from OK Go's diluted take on Spoon's "Turn My Camera On," to Stars Crashing Cars' spin on Foo Fighters, some of it good, some not particularly memorable, all perfectly good stylish wallpaper for a TV soap that needs to be a little bit trashier than it is.
