Product Overview

Expectations for vocalist Josh Groban's third release ran high, especially given the phenomenal success of his sophomore effort, CLOSER, which reached number one on the Billboard charts. Like Andrea Bocelli, Groban treads the line between classical, operatic singing, and crossover pop. AWAKE manages the synthesis beautifully. With its strong batch of songs, and Groban's voice continuing to develop, the album may even best its predecessor.

Opener "Mai," sung in Italian, sets the tone for the album. Highly romantic, stirring, and couched in tasteful orchestral arrangements, the song is the perfect canvas for Groban's heart-melting delivery. "February Song," which finds the artist accompanied only by piano, is more reserved and plaintive. Other album highlights include "Machine," with a funky, jazzy backdrop provided by Herbie Hancock, and "Lullaby" and "Weeping," which feature the South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mombazo.

Artist Overview
One of the leading classical crossover artists of his generation, Josh Groban has a warm voice, and superb vocal technique with a wide range that allows him to sing both tenor arias and more baritone-friendly pop standards. Although based in classical music, Groban's eclectic taste has found him incorporating a variety of genres into his albums from opera and bluegrass to folk, melodic pop, and Broadway standards. Prior to singing, Groban studied acting, a passion he has returned to, making appearances on TV and films like Muppets Most Wanted. Despite his multi-dimensional talent, Groban remains an active singer deeply connected to his classical roots. ~ Matt Collar
Artist Bio
When Warner Brothers Records inquired about signing the young singer to a recording contract, Groban put his schooling on hold to pursue his music career. His self-titled debut was issued in November 2001. The album was produced and arranged by Foster, and featured appearances by Charlotte Church, the Corrs, Rhys Fulber, and Lili Haydn. Around the same time, Groban put his acting and vocal talents to use in the season finale of the US television show, Ally McBeal, singing "You're Still You". An in-concert set was released as a stop-gap the following year while the singer worked on his new studio album. Closer, released in November 2003, confirmed Groban's star status in his homeland, taking up residence in the US Top 10 over the Christmas period. The album eventually topped the charts in January 2004.
