| After six years off, Julian Marley, scion of reggae's first family, returned in 2009 with AWAKE. The record opens on the wistful, organic groove of the title track, an organ-laced and plainly pretty song which injects a refreshing angle on the oft-travelled topic of consciousness. There's a psychedelic undercurrent to the classic Rastafarian reggae on AWAKE, as a keen love for tradition mixes with an ear for a modern jam. However, the best moment may come on the pure old-school Jamaican love-lost song "A Little Too Late." | |

Artist Overview
The son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Lucy Pounder, Julian Marley grew up away from his half-brothers Ziggy and Damian, having been raised in England with his mother. He still visited his father and Rita Marley in Jamaica, and by 1989 became involved in Ziggy and Stephen Marley's production company, Ghetto Youth International. Stephen executive produced Julian's debut album, Lion in the Morning, released by Tuff Gong in 1996. In 2003 he dropped A Time & Place, and then in 2009 he released Awake, which featured tracks with both Stephen and Damian. ~ David Jeffries

Professional Reviews
Record Collector (magazine)
(p.94)
- 5 stars out of 5 -- "[F]ull of variety, linked not only by Julian's excellent songwriting but also by the creative production of brother Steven, who crafts 70s roots reggae rhythms finely, but with an up-to-date edge."
