On February 24, 1969, 2 days before he turned 37, the legendary Johnny Cash led his traveling troupe behind the foreboding walls of the California State Penitentiary at San Quentin. This 2 CD/DVD set includes 31 audio selections, 13 of which were previously unissued, plus a DVD called Johnny Cash In San Quentin, a 1969 documentary made by England's Granada TV for British television. Included are concert excerpts plus interviews with prisoners and guards. The Tennessee Three backs up Cash, with additional performances by Carl Perkins, The Statler Brothers, and the Carter Family featuring Mother Maybelle Carter and June Carter Cash.
Editor's Note
In 1969, country icon Johnny Cash set out to repeat the success of the previous year's AT FOLSOM PRISON with another live performance recorded in one of America's most notorious penal institutions, the California State Penitentiary at San Quentin. The concert was filmed for a British television documentary and the attendant album, AT SAN QUENTIN, sold even more copies than its predecessor. It was not the first time Cash had recorded in prison, but this appearance, at a time when American values were being vociferously questioned, suggested the artist's rebelliousness had not dimmed.

This DualDisc presents an expanded version of the original concert album with all 31 songs of Cash's performance (13 of which were previously unreleased), as well as the full-length British television documentary and bonus interviews with some of the prisoners and guards who were in attendance at the 1969 concert.
