Product Overview

Country music giant Charlie Louvin's first new studio album in over ten years! Released on the New York-based Tompkins Square label.

The self-titled disc, produced by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Calexico, Candi Staton) and Charlie Louvin, was recorded in Spring/Summer 2006 in Nashville. It features guest performances by Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Bobby Bare Sr., Tift Merritt, Marty Stuart, David Kilgour, and members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, Superchunk, Blanche and Clem Snide, among others.

The album features several Louvin Brothers classics as well as country favorites first popularized by Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, the Carter Family, and the Monroe Brothers. Charlie also has included a moving tribute to his late brother Ira Louvin, with whom he formed the Louvin Brothers in 1940. (Ira died in a car accident in 1965, at age 41.)

Charlie Louvin's influence on country, alt-country, and their many sub-genres, is incalculable. The unique harmonies and lyrical folk poetry of the Louvin Brothers ("among the top duos in country music history" AllMusic.com) have inspired countless covers of their songs by such artists as Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, the Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Uncle Tupelo and the Raconteurs (with Jack White).

"Must You Throw Dirt In My Face," a new version of the Louvin Brothers' 1962 hit featuring Charlie with George Jones, is the first track to be released from Charlie Louvin and is available now through all online digital music stores. In support of his new album, Charlie Louvin and his band will tour the US extensively in 2007, including special summer appearances celebrating the artist's 80th birthday (July 7, 2007).

As one half of the Louvin Brothers, Charlie Louvin made country music history in the 1950s with a steady stream of singles that mixed bluegrass, gospel, and Carter Family-like balladry. Alcoholic sibling Ira Louvin went off the rails in the early '60s and died in '65. Charlie's subsequent solo career was aesthetically consistent, but never as high-profile. At the age of 80, he could have been forgiven for resting on his laurels, but he was nevertheless game for a new recording that paired him with old-school country artists as well as alt-rockers who've absorbed his influence.
Nothing could ever replace the unique Ira/Charlie harmonies, and wisely that's not even attempted on the versions of classic Louvin Brothers tunes that are the album's calling card. George Jones's commiserating vocal on "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face" is respectful of the place the tune holds in the country canon but suggests new possibilities for it. Likewise, Will Oldham's assist on the chilling murder ballad "Knoxville Girl" takes more of a tag-team approach than a Louvins-style dual attack. Along the way, everyone from Elvis Costello to Tom T. Hall joins in, but the octogenarian country titan stays firmly in the forefront, assuring that CHARLIE LOUVIN remains on the right track.
Artist Overview
Until their split in 1963, Charlie Louvin was one half of the popular country duo the Louvin Brothers alongside older brother Ira. Their hits included "Cash on the Barrelhead" and the 1959 country gospel album SATAN IS REAL. Following Ira's 1965 death, Louvin began a solo career, maintaining an impressive balance between the Nashville gentry (regularly appearing on the Grand Ol' Opry) and the renegade alt-country scene. In 2007, at the age of 80, Louvin signed with the alt-country label Tompkins Square Records and released a self-titled album of duets with acolytes like Elvis Costello, Will Oldham and George Jones.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Louvin turns out highly likable collabos with people such as Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. Well-penned and dustily tuneful."
Entertainment Weekly (p.98) - "[Featuring] lovely, utterly unpretentious readings of these dozen bluegrass standards, blues, and selections from his own songbook." -- Grade: B
Uncut (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]mong the sturdy Louvins/Carter Family/Bill Monroe chestnuts, 'Ira', a tearful elegy to his brother's legacy stands out."
Magnet (p.103) - "[A]t 79 years of age and with his voice taking on a handsome, lacquered husk not unlike that of Dr. Ralph Stanley, Louvin remains the focal point."
Dirty Linen (p.82) - "Louvin sounds great and seems to be having a ball running through a set of Louvin Brothers tunes and classics by the likes of A.P. Carter, Jimmie Rodgers, and the Delmore Brothers."
No Depression (p.111) - "The project positions Louvin as a crucial link between country's foundations and future....It's hard for a murder ballad to get an darker than the matter-of-fact 'Knoxville Girl', or for heartbreak to sound more desolately abject than on 'Must You Throw Dirt On My Face'."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here is subtle beauty here and cuts such as the tender biographical tribute 'Ira'...and 'Grave On The Green Hillside' are a real delight."
Artist Bio
Charlie LouvinThe term "living legend" gets thrown around quite a bit, but it actually applies to Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin. The magical harmonies and depth of feeling found on Louvin Brothers recordings of the 50's and 60's inspired a new generation of musicians, firmly establishing the Louvins' stature as one of the most influential duos in country music history. In 2006, the Tompkins Square label reached out to Charlie about making his first new studio album in over ten years. They enlisted Mark Nevers, who engineered sessions for many top country artists, and produced Calexico, Lambchop, Candi Staton among others. Guests on the album include Elvis Costello, George Jones, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, Tift Merritt, Marty Stuart, Bobby Bare Sr., David Kilgour, members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, Clem Snide, Superchunk and more.Louvin enjoyed the experience. "Mark Nevers is one of the best engineers I've ever worked with. My brother and I cut our teeth on some of those old songs and they influenced us tremendously. ReviewSource Rolling Stone
Review On his umpteenth album, seventy-nine-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer Louvin turns out highly likable collabos with people such as Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. Well-penned and dustily tuneful, the songs -- many of them older than the guest stars -- benefit from some extra spice: Dig the dissonance between Louvin's crusty drawl and the nasal come-ons of Eef Barzalay on "The Christian Life."
