The 1997 debut album from West Coast gangsta rapper Suga Free (reissued in 2006) is distinguished by the fine production work of DJ Quik, whose spare, rolling beats create an intriguing canvas for Suga Free's flows. Suga Free's themes rarely range outside the usual hardcore topics, but the rapper's own time on the streets infuses his rhymes with a hefty dose of credibility. Still, he never overplays his hand, opting instead for a cool, pimped-out pose that allows for wit and flair. The general vibe, which borrows from classic Cali G-funk, is enjoyable, and STREET GOSPEL comes recommended to fans of West Coast hardcore.
