| Forever 90s is an 18-track excursion through the recent past that mainly sticks to the adult pop side of the alt-rock scene with a couple of detours into kiddie pop that just about ruin the ride. Apart from the head-scratching inclusion of 98ø ("The Hardest Thing") and O-Town ("All or Nothing"), the collection does a nice job of balancing the sensitivity and frivolousness of the decade's music, featuring such weep-in-your-hankie songs as Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You," the Cranberries' "Dreams," and Edwin McCain's "I'll Be," alongside sweetly airheaded tracks like Tal Bachman's "She's So High," frothy confections like the Cardigans' "Lovefool," and Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and clever rockers from Fastball ("Out of My Head") and Third Eye Blind ("How's It Going to Be"). Too bad about the mood-wrecking teen pop songs, though, as they make this otherwise enjoyable disc something of a non-starter. ~ Tim Sendra | |
