| Celebrating the heyday of reggae producer King Jammy, this compilation collects the sound system supremo's pioneering "Under Mi Sleng Teng" rhythm as well as many of his other fruitful collaborations, notably with the veteran singers John Holt, Johnny Osbourne, Leroy Smart, and Dennis Brown. Jammy's wholesale adaptation of electronic sounds to reggae rhythms heralded the onset of the now-ubiquitous dancehall rhythm, as well as giving reggae a much needed musical shot in the arm--as can be heard on Osbourne's joyful "Water Pumping," and Admiral Bailey and Chaka Demus's reworking of the venerable "One Scotch" toast. Jammy's version of "If I Were a Carpenter" highlights and focuses Holt's inimitable voice, while Half Pint's bubbly "Mr. Landlord" is a typical combination of social commentary and irresistible dance rhythms. | |
