Product Overview

With his combination of hip-hop braggadocio and current news gripping music, Common is taking rap music to the new standard. The Chicago native decided on his moniker, Common Sense, for its natural feel. As the result of a copyright lawsuit filed by a company using the same name, it was later drilled down to the current name.

Other albums by Common include, "Resurrection" and "On Day It'll All Make Sense."

Considered by critics to be one of hip-hop's most skilled lyricists, Common has yet to receive the mainstream attention he deserves. But LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE, his fourth album, is likely to change that. While positive lyrics and musical uniqueness have always been Common's forte, this MCA Records' debut presented feel-good hip-hop at a time when the genre's most successful artists were concerned with materialism and party-friendly production. Most of the beats on LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE are provided by Jaydee of the Ummah, a producer who helped shape the latter sound of A Tribe Called Quest. And while Common's strongest track, "The 6th Sense," was actually produced by DJ Premier, his TCQ-inspired sound on this album sheds new light on the prolific rapper.
Artist Overview
Common was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His outward-looking, nimbly performed rhymes and political consciousness didn't fit the fashions of the moment, but he was able to win a devoted cult audience. By the late '90s, a substantial movement had set about reviving the bohemian sensibility of alternative rap, and Common received wider recognition. Albums such as Like Water for Chocolate (2000) and Be (2005) were praised by critics and certified gold-sellers. He eventually juggled his recording career with high-profile acting roles. ~ Steve Huey
