While a title like Most Powerful Voices might suggest a collection full of gospel belting, this sampler from the Music World label of Mathew Knowles (father of Beyonc?) explores different meanings for the word "powerful." Certainly, some of these performances may be considered powerful in the conventional sense, starting with Myron Butler & Levi's percussion-filled "Set Me Free," and including Vanessa Bell Armstrong's "It's Over Now," which begins calmly enough, but by the end finds the singer exhorting her listeners, wherever they may be, to stand up and praise God. But the singers making up Trin-i-tee 5:7 on "I'm Still Holdin' On" often seem more intimate than powerful, and Kim Burrell adopts a conversational tone on "Happy." Still, these gospel singers get their points across without getting too vehement, demonstrating that the power resides in the Almighty. That's what Micah Stampley means when, in "Corinthian Song," she works herself up to declaring, "I'm a vessel full of power with a treasure from the Lord." Finally, Juanita Bynum manages to be powerful on "Soul Cry (Oh, Oh, Oh)," without even singing, for the most part. Gospel is about powerful voices used in the service of reverence, and the ten examples here express their strength and renew it in faith. ~ William Ruhlmann |
