Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Muze PNote Although the soundtrack to Bernie Mac's baseball comedy Mr. 3000 might be a somewhat predictable mix of classic funk, disco, and soul hits, that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. In fact, the bulk of the album is just as good, if not better, than many compilations of these styles. Mr. 3000's beginning is particularly strong, with the triple threat of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star," Kool & the Gang's "Jungle Boogie," and McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now." But nearly every song on the soundtrack is a highlight, including Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," Joe Tex's "I Gotcha," and James Brown's "(Call Me) Super Bad." And even though Steve Lawrence's "The Best Is Yet to Come" is a pretty far cry from the rest of the soundtrack, its snazzy, optimistic feel makes it work with the rest of the album. Mr. 3000's lone new track, a Babyface-produced remake of "If You Don't Know Me by Now" by Calvin Richardson and Claudette Ortiz, doesn't touch the heights of the original, but few things can, and it's a decent, respectful cover. Still, the soundtrack's heart is in its vintage tracks. It might not be the most creative soundtrack, but Mr. 3000 still has a formidable batting average. ~ Heather Phares
