| The soundtrack to PLANET OF THE APES has been issued on several labels, but the Varese Sarabande edition is the natural pick. It includes previously unreleased material, new cover art and liner notes, a suite from the 1971 sequel ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, Alfred Newman's famous "Twentieth Century Fox Fanfare," and the original score in its entirety with newly remixed and remastered sound. Jerry Goldsmith's score sounds as fresh and startling today as it did on the film's 1968 release. | |
| Clearly influenced by modernist composers like Bartok and Stavinsky, Goldsmith employs fragmented phrases, jarring rhythms, dissonance, and the use of silence as a compositional device. The themes are both primitive and futuristic, and are conjured with tension-filled ostinatos on piano and plucked strings, simple woodwind phrases, a bass slide whistle, and ragged, echoing percussion. There are few moments of reprieve in the score; the music reflects the film's depiction of an off-kilter reality, and even low-key selections (like "A New Mate") are underscored by an ominous mood. A stark, intense, and highly experimental piece of music, PLANET OF THE APES achieves the genuine otherworldliness to which most science fiction soundtracks only aspire. | |

Artist Overview
Jerry Goldsmith was one of the most gifted and prolific film composers of the 20th century. Early in his career, the Los Angeles native studied with renowned composer Miklos Rosza and was championed by Alfred Newman. Goldsmith started scoring TV shows in the 1950s (GUNSMOKE, TWILIGHT ZONE, MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.) but soon graduated to film soundtracks, where his evocative themes and elegant orchestrations made him a star in short order. In the '60s, he started working with avant garde formats (PLANET OF THE APES) and experimenting with electronics (THE ILLUSTRATED MAN) in addition to his orchestral scores. Of the innumerable film soundtracks he's created, many were nominated for Oscars, but incredibly, only his score for THE OMEN won the award.
