Puttin the O Back!

by westcoast_rodeo on 3/21/2005

This debut album from Shooter Jennings is awesome. I really like the fact that it's not just plain country music because it has that rock/outlaw edge to it. My favorite tracks are Busted in Baylor County and 4th of July because you really get a sense of the outlaw sound in his music. This album for sure would make his father Waylon proud. Overall it was worth the purchase and I recommend it to all.

Shooter Puts the Rock Back!

on 6/29/2005

Shooter Jennings is probably best recognized as the son of legendary artist Waylon Jennings. This is both a blessing and a curse for many trying to break out of the shadows of their famous predecessors. True Shooter is not the same type of artist as his father, but he still possess amazing talent. The apple has not fallen far from the tree and Shooter more than proves to all his critics that he is the real deal with this album. Put the "O" back into country blends classic rock and country riffs to form an album that is both new and refreshing. For anyone who loves country and rock this album is a must have and for anyone who is not into the genre they will be after listening to this album.

The long hair and beard, the distinctive black Fender Telecaster, the 1970s-style logo--it all looks so familiar, almost like a Waylon Jennings record. Many listeners may have this sense of deja vu when first presented with PUT THE O BACK IN COUNTRY. This is understandable, of course, since Shooter Jennings is indeed the son of the Outlaw country hero. Despite the striking visual resemblance, however, those searching for a straight-up HONKY TONK HEROES redux may want to look elsewhere.
Sure, the album is as rough and ready as the elder Jennings's '70s work, and features a guest appearance from George Jones. However, the aesthetic here often has more to do with the punky No Depression sound of Uncle Tupelo and Slobberbone than with the 1970s Outlaw scene. Raging rock guitars and pounding John Bonham-esque drums are often the order of the day ("4th Of July," "Steady at the Wheel," "Daddy's Farm"), though the Charlie Daniels-style violin and sliding steel guitar ("Solid Country Gold") serve to occasionally remind the listener of Shooter's pedigree. A little bit country, a lot more rock & roll, and filled to the brim with Waylon-like attitude, PUT THE O BACK IN COUNTRY shows that while Shooter Jennings may inhabit a different orchard than his father, the apple still doesn't fall far from the tree.
Artist Overview
As the child of country legends Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings, Shooter Jennings might as well have been born on the sawdust floor of a honky tonk. After spending a few years in a little-known hard rock band, Shooter took up the family business and began releasing solid albums of guitar-heavy country in the tradition of his folks. Though Jennings is clearly in touch with country music's past, he is also very much a product of his own time. This gives his music a scruffy alternative vibe that aligns him with contemporaries such as Ryan Adams, Bobby Bare Jr., and the Drive-By Truckers. Jennings played his father in the 2006 film WALK THE LINE.
