Yukmouth, a member of the Oakland, CA-based platinum selling group The Luniz, brings the heat on his debut solo album. THUGGED OUT is a twenty-eight-track double CD that combines a rugged style of rhyme delivery with left coast-flavored street beats. Joining Yukmouth on the album are numerous heavy caliber MC's. Check for MC Ren ("Stallion"), The Outlawz ("Do Yo Thug Thang," "Still Ballin'"), Tela ("Menage A Trois") and the whole Rap-A-Lot family on "Rap-A-Lot Mafia."
Yukmouth speaks to his audience about his most personal experiences and encounters. In the song "Sacrifice," Yuk describes the tragic death of his mother, while "Father Like Son" will leave you touched by the love Yuk has for his young son. Make sure you check out "My Buddy," which features Daz, Kurupt and Numskull, and "Baller Mode," which has a great guest spot from E-40. Overall, THUGGED OUT has plenty to keep the listener's attention.
The Cali rapper made his name as the more swaggering (and often more potent) half of rap duo the Luniz, who enjoyed a brief moment of fame in 1995 with the international hit single and ode to narcotics sharing "I Got 5 on It." Yukmouth began dropping solo slabs in the late '90s, and while his spare, bottom-heavy recordings have never matched the level of his Luniz work, his smooth flow and taut rhymes delivered in a slight growl helped him remain a respected force in hip-hop circles, particularly within the hyphy scene.
CMJ (3/15/99, p.30) - "...Yukmouth delivers intelligent, rugged verses over Mike Dean's piano loops and throbbing bass kicks..."
The Source (12/98, p.210) - "...Yuk continues the saga at 3/4 the pace, chopping it up with various artists over the Luniz's signature sound of break beats and violins..."
