|Think of TOTALLY HITS 2003 as a musical time capsule of artists riding high on the 2003 pop charts. As far as trends go, none loom larger on this compilation than the one stemming from the show American Idol. Kelly Clarkson ("Miss Independence"), Clay Aiken ("This Is the Night") and Ruben Studdard ("Flying Without Wings") all represent the reality show. Of course, the bubble-gum pop brigade of the late 1990s blew open the doors for this show, so appropriately enough tourmates Justin Timberlake ("Cry Me a River") and Christina Aguilera ("Fighter") find their way onto anthology. This whole pop movement also manifests itself across genres with alt-folkie Jewel going this route ("Intuition"), classic rockers Santana working yet another superstar duet (with the Calling's Alex Band on "Why Don't You & I"), and even singer-songwriter Michelle Branch doling out some ear candy ("Are You Happy Now?"). Folks looking for edgy get tracks by alt-rockers Trapt ("Headstrong"), lollipop punk act Simple Plan ("Addicted"), and female brethren Avril Lavigne ("Sk8er Boy"). And, of course, contemporary R&B fans will find plenty to nosh on by way of songs by Luther Vandross, Monica Arnold, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, and the R. Kelly collaboration with Camron and Big Tigger.
