This is one of the more interesting reissues from the Trojan vaults, featuring 50 Caribbean classics that have emerged as favorites at carnival time. Many of these tracks have been previously unavailable on CD, and the tone of this three-disc set is light, breezy, and upbeat. Highlights are frequent, but include the Pioneers' bouncy and honest "Jamaica Jerk Off," the infectious "Reggae from the Ghetto" from John Holt, the Viceroys' mento-sounding "Wheel and Jig," and a funky version of Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" by the Uniques. ~ Steve Leggett |
