George R.R. Martin
George Richard Raymond Martin began writing very early, and says that he sold original monster stories to neighborhood kids for pennies--a price which apparently included dramatic readings of these tales. Martin graduated summa cum laude from Northwestern University with a B.S. in journalism. The next year he received a master's degree, also in journalism, and published his first stories, "Songs the Dead Man Sing" and "The Hero". A conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, Martin worked with the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation as an alternate service. Throughout the 1970s he worked a number of jobs--including teaching journalism and directing chess tournaments--while continuing to write. Martin won his first Hugo in 1975 for "A Song for Lya". His first novel, DYING OF THE LIGHT, received a Hugo nomination in 1978. Ending the 1970s with a bang, he won two more Hugos, both in 1980, one for the story "Sandkings", which also garnered Martin his first Nebula Award. The early 1980s saw the release of two extraordinary novels, FEVRE DREAM and THE ARMAGEDDON RAG. The first of these, a brilliant novel of vampires stalking the Mississippi River towns of the 1800s, remains one of the greatest vampire novels ever written. The second is a searing indictment of America in the 1970s, couched in a strange tale of possession and power in the world of rock & roll. Both novels were nominated for the prestigious World Fantasy Award. Continuing to write award-winning short fiction, Martin began to work in television in the mid-1980s. He was a script editor on the revived TWILIGHT ZONE show, later moving to the enormously popular BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, for which he eventually became the executive producer. In 1987 he introduced an anthology series under the title Wild Cards, which he edited and occasionally contributed stories. This series proved remarkable successful and has expanded to over 30 books. Martin devoted much of the early 1990s to writing one novel, the massive A GAME OF THRONES. This epic fantasy work, the first of a projected series, was met with great acclaim, with many claiming it to be the best high-fantasy novel ever. Its sequel, A CLASH OF KINGS, cemented this theory for many fans, and, with this series, it looks like Martin will remain at the front of the field for a very long time.
Praise
"[O]f those who work in the grand epic-fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best....[T]his is as good a time as any to proclaim him the American Tolkien....A FEAST FOR CROWS isn't pretty elves against gnarly orcs. It's men and women slugging it out in the muck, for money and power and lust and love."
From the Publisher
Editors Note In A FEAST FOR CROWS, a new equilibrium has been reached as the land and its factions pause to lick their wounds. With the death of a monstrous king, Cersei is ruling as regent in King's Landing. Robb Stark's demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are all scattered. Few legitimate claims to the Iron Throne still exist--or are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. But as in the aftermath of any climactic battle, it is not long before the carrion-eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and dying. Now, in the Seven Kingdoms, as human crows gather to form new plots and alliances, other will learn new skills and talents for the skirmishes ahead.
Annotation As the fourth volume of the amazingly intricate, emotionally nuanced epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire opens, most of the original contenders for the throne of Westeros have been killed in the civil wars ravaging the land. In the wake of their deaths, a sullen, fragile peace settles over Westeros, and the survivors scheme to seize what scraps of power still remain.
Annotation 2 Because he ran out of pages and deadlines, author George R. R. Martin picks up only half the threads of the amazingly intricate tapestry left unfinished in A STORM OF SWORDS, the previous volume of the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. The remaining storylines continue in the following book, A DANCE OF DRAGONS. As this fourth installment opens, most of the original contenders for the throne of Westeros have been killed in the civil wars ravaging the land. In the wake of their deaths, the survivors scheme to seize what scraps of power still remain. At the center of things in King's Landing, Queen Cersei, regent for her eight-year-old son, King Tommen, takes refuge in her wine cup as her grip upon the Iron Throne begins to slip. Plotters in the realm of Dorne, angry at the death of Prince Oberyn, scheme to put Cersei's daughter, Princess Myrcella, in her younger brother's place. The various relatives of the now-deceased Balon Greyjoy, King of the Iron Islands, stick to local politics as they struggle to determine their own royal succession. Meanwhile, Lady Brienne of Tarth, too ugly to be taken seriously as a woman and too female to be taken seriously as a knight, confronts danger and mistrust on every side as she searches for the two missing Stark daughters, 13-year-old Sansa (actually in hiding at her late aunt's stronghold in the Vale) and 11-year-old Arya (facing mysterious challenges at the Temple of the Many-Faced God on the isle of Braavos).
First Line 'Dragons,' said Mollander. He snatched a withered apple off the ground and tossed it hand to hand.
Editors Note 4 In the fourth novel in the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, the kingdom exists in a state of perilous equilibrium following the death of a monstrous king, a regent ruling in King's Landing, and few claimants to the Iron Throne, until new conspiracies and alliances begin to erupt in the Seven Kingdoms.
