Annotation:
Blanche Overtha Yancey (nicknamed Boy) is a pampered African-American girl who lives with her family in North Carolina. Generations ago, Boy's ancestors were slaves, but she scorns this aspect of her family history. Then she finds herself magically transported back in time to the 1850s, where she experiences life as a slave. Many of Boy's fictional adventures are based on actual plantation records and oral slave narratives.
