Betsy Byars
Betsy Byars is well known for her series of books about a young boy named Bingo Brown and her series on members of the Blossom family, including WANTED...MUD BLOSSOM, about the family dog. She is a graduate of North Carolina's Queens College. Byars won the Newbery Medal in 1970 for THE SUMMER OF THE SWANS, in which a young adolescent girl comes to terms with her family and herself. A dedicated pilot, Betsy Byars even lived in a house on an airstrip--the house's bottom level was an airplane hanger while the top level contained her writing studio.
"A poignant and humorous novel."
From the Publisher
First Line Sara Godfrey was lying on the bed tying a kerchief on the dog, Boysie.
Annotation Fourteen-year-old Sara Godfrey's summer isn't going very well: she's bored, lonely, and longing to be a completely different person. Recently, Sara's sole source of comfort has been the group of swans on a nearby lake. Watching the regal swans gives Sara and Charlie, her mentally retarded brother, a sense of peace. But one night Charlie disappears, and Sara must put aside her own troubles and help find him. Winner of the 1971 Newbery Medal.
