Author Bio
Madeleine L'Engle
Best known for her classic children's book, A WRINKLE IN TIME, winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, Madeleine L'Engle also wrote dozens of books for adults. Her writing was deeply influenced by her childhood, during which she suffered through a series of bad school experiences. L'Engle attended Smith College and married Hugh Franklin, an actor, with whom she had three children. Many of her books are a combination of science fiction, fantasy, and spirituality. Interestingly, although her books often contain a strong Christian element, they have sometimes been challenged for what some believe to be an "anti-Christian message." In 1997 she was honored with the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and in 2004 was a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. She died at the age of 88.
