A terrible accident has left little Keefer orphaned but not unwanted. Devastated by his beloved sister''s tragic death, twenty-four-year-old bachelor Gordon McKenna assumes that he will be entrusted with raising his niece, whom he has grown extremely close to over the few precious months of Keefer''s life. But the child''s paternal grandparents have different ideas--and a fierce legal battle ensues that will test the capacity and limitations of family love again and again . . . and no one will emerge from it unscathed or unchanged.

Jacquelyn Mitchard, whose powerful, emotionally rich novels have won resounding critical acclaim and a wide, enthusiastic audience worldwide, brings us a soaring, heartbreaking, and unforgettable tale of love and the bonds that unite us all.

Author Bio
Jacquelyn Mitchard
In 1993, Mitchard's husband, journalist Dan Allegretti, died of cancer. Despite the financial risks involved in raising five children on a freelance career, Mitchard continued her writing and finished several chapters of her first novel, "The Deep End of the Ocean", at an artists' colony. Viking bought the rights to the uncompleted novel for half a million dollars, and Mitchard soon sold the film rights as well. Mitchard moved with her five children to Madison, Wisconsin.

New York Times
"Perhaps readers who enjoy homespun nostalgia...and a safe perch on the side of the angels will make A THEORY OF RELATIVITY popular....And Ms. Mitchard does make some of her characters, especially Lorraine, appealing....But this new its arguments from such a stacked deck that suspense and drama are not honest options, no matter how many setbacks the story's righteous side endures." - Janet Maslin 06/21/2001
