Author Bio
Madeleine L'Engle
Best known for her classic children's book, A WRINKLE IN TIME, winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, Madeleine L'Engle also wrote dozens of books for adults. Her writing was deeply influenced by her childhood, during which she suffered through a series of bad school experiences. L'Engle attended Smith College and married Hugh Franklin, an actor, with whom she had three children. Many of her books are a combination of science fiction, fantasy, and spirituality. Interestingly, although her books often contain a strong Christian element, they have sometimes been challenged for what some believe to be an "anti-Christian message." In 1997 she was honored with the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and in 2004 was a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. She died at the age of 88.The oldest of five children, Anna Quindlen grew up in an Irish-Italian family outside Philadelphia. She attended Barnard College, and in 1974 began her career as a reporter. Her column in the New York Times was enormously successful, and in 1992 she won a Pulitzer Prize for her newspaper work. In 1995, she quit her job at the Times to write fiction full time.
Praise
(unknown)
"Has the general appearance of being science fiction, but it is not. There is a mystery, mysticism, a feeling of indefinable, brooding horror...original, different, exciting." New York Times
"Imaginative readers should find it wholly absorbing--for in her highly accelerated spin through space, Miss L'Engle never loses sight of human needs and emotions."
