He's a cop with an attitude.
Chicago cop Nico Toscani (Steven Seagal) is on to something big. Suspects collared in a drug raid are allowed to walk. And Nico himself is asked to turn in his badge. He may be off the force--but not out of the action. Seagal makes his sensational screen debut as Nico in Above The Law, smashing his way into the top ranks of action stars as he tracks ex-CIA operatives trafficking drugs...and plotting a political assassination. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) unleashes the fury all over the Windy City as Nico and partner Jax (Pam Grier) close in on a psychotic crimelord (Henry Silva). This DVD Giftset features the DVD, Above The Law, and the book Golf: 101 Essential Tips!

"The action sequences will knock you out of your seat!  Jeffrey Lyons, Sneak Previews
"...a one-man lethal weapon...  Pat Collins, WWOR-TV

Editor's Note
Probably the best of Steven Seagal's three-word-titled action films from the 1990s was his debut, ABOVE THE LAW. Seagal plays Nico, a tough cop who pulls off the biggest drug bust of his career, only to have the FBI throw a wrench in it: why are they protecting one of the country's biggest drug lords, and what does it have to do with Nico's covert work in Vietnam? As his temper explodes all over Chicago, Nico's sixth-degree black belt in aikido proves helpful in his search for answers. Blaxploitation icon Pam Grier plays Nico's partner, Jax.

Professional Reviews

"...Robert Steadman's eye for capturing all of the action without crowding the picture is well executed..." 04/06/1988

Los Angeles Times
"...Davis packs it with excitingly grimy Chicago atmosphere, and the actors, Seagal included, give it a terse, hard-bitten energy..." 04/08/1988 p.C14

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
...[Seagal is] effective in his film debut. His voice has a certain quality to it, like Richard Gere's, that suggests he sometimes would rather keep talking after he barks out typical action dialogue. He is physical enough to create a believable menace in the violent scenes, and yet we can believe that sensitivity coexists with brutality in his makeup. Is he indeed Hollywood's hottest new action star? Who knows. But he has the stuff. - Roger Ebert
