Will Durant once lamented that, philosophy is no longer loved today because she has lost the spirit of adventure. Adventures in Philosophy is Durants attempt to recapture that spirit. In actual debates, symposiums, and personal discussions, topics such as the meaning of life, politics, religion, history, and the nature of humanity are all explored by Durant and some of the leading minds of the 20th century. Also included are fictional dialogues, written by Durant, which bring together many of historys greatest minds in a discussion of philosophys most challenging questions. In these symposiums, the scope and breadth of Durants erudition is at once apparent, yet done so in wonderful, often epigrammatic, prose that (as Max Schuster once commented) begs to read aloud. *Author: Durant, Will *Binding Type: Paperback *Number of Pages: 276 *Publication Date: 2008/01/01 *Language: English *Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.58 inches
Author Bio
Will Durant
William James Durant attended St. Peter's College in Jersey City, New Jersey. He taught Latin and French at Seton Hall College (now University), then taught in New York City, followed by a post as director and lecturer in philosophy at the Labor Temple School. He began his career as a reporter, and had even planned to enter the Catholic priesthood, but changed his mind. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1917. The lectures he delivered at Labor Temple were published as THE STORY OF PHILOSOPHY in 1926, and were so well-received that he quit his job to become a full-time writer. He moved with his wife and collaborator, Ariel Durant, to Los Angeles, where he worked on his most notable project: an 11-volume survey of history, civilization, art, literature, science, and their interrelations. Will did most of the writing, while his wife completed the research. Though THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION has been criticized by academic historians, it has nevertheless been one of the most successful, popular, and accessible histories of all time. The 10th volume, ROUSSEAU AND REVOLUTION, earned the couple the Pulitzer Prize in 1968. Will and Ariel Durant collaborated on a summing up volume, THE LESSONS OF HISTORY, as well as A DUAL BIOGRAPHY.
