| The title of this book, Adventures of Ideas, bears two meanings, both applicable to the subject-matter. One meaning is the effect of certain ideas in promoting the slow drift of mankind towards civilization. This is the Adventure of Ideas in the history of mankind. The other meaning is the author's adventure in framing a speculative scheme of ideas which shall be explanatory of the historical adventure. |

Author Bio
Alfred North Whitehead
A mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Witehead's claim to fame is to have co-written the famous treatise PRINCIPIA MATHEMATICA with Bertrand Russell. In 1884, Whitehead graduated from Cambridge University. He taught mathematics at Trinity College until, in 1924, he moved to Harvard, where he remained a professor of philosophy until his death in 1947. While he was never as famous, or infamous, as Russell, who had been his student, he nevertheless was the author of several books that were popular among the general educated public, including MODES OF THOUGHT, a collection of essays, and ADVENTURES OF IDEAS, which traced the Western intellectual tradition and had a long life in paperback.
