Spy Kids merges with James Bond

on 12/14/2012

This is a fun, "mission impossible" style adventure film for kids. The action scenes are realistic, not the cartoon-type stuff you see in the Spy Kid movies. My kids were glued to the screen because of the non-stop suspense. The opening scene is very intense and incredibly well done and I believe sets the tone for the entire movie. A refreshing note to parents--there is little to no objectionable material in this movie.

Review A shake 'n' bake Brit teen-spy actioner, without a smidgeon of originality, humor or involving characterization, "Stormbreaker" is a high-profile bust. First pic in a hoped-for series based on the Alex Rider novels by Anthony Horowitz...Story finally comes into view around the midway mark, as Rider visits Darrius Sayle (Rourke, extravagant) at a Blofeld-like HQ in the wilds of Cornwall...Aside from the dialogue, which doesn't have one decent laugh in it, no attempt is made by Horowitz to capitalize on Rider's youth in an original way. Upper-crust kid seems to have no weaknesses and operates as simply a teen version of James Bond, sans the wise-cracking charm and sexual frissons...Tech package and action staging are slick but impersonal; color processing on the print caught was cold and unattractive. Andrew MacRitchie's restless editing and Alan Parker's booming music both add to the feeling of being beaten into submission by a relentless machine.

Review Good comic business by some reliable Brits fails to freshen up the familiar contents of this boys'-own espionage thriller. Though based on the first of a popular series of young-adult novels by Anthony Horowitz, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker apparently looked to other movies for its ideas -- the 007, Spy Kids and Mission: Impossible franchises have all been extensively ransacked...Her Majesty's equivalent to Agent Cody Banks...Director Geoffrey Sax maintains a hectic pace yet the so-so gadgetry, bloodless but violent action scenes and bland young hero are outdone by the eyebrows of Bill Nighy: along with Andy Serkis' equally nutty performance as one of Darrius' henchmen, Nighy's wonderfully arch turn as Alex's new spymaster gives this tepid flick some badly needed zest.

Quotes
Gregory Kirshling, Entertainment Weekly ..."Agent Cody Banks" played British...
Jack Mathews, New York Daily News ...has the sheen and special effects of a Bond movie, and the ambition as well.
Jeffrey K. Howard, City Channel-TV An exciting spy adventure for the whole family.
Michael Esposito, Chicago Tribune ...better than some James Bond movies--no matter what your age.
USA Today ...the veteran cast is amusing and the engaging Pettyfer makes a solid debut.
