Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline are both President and accounted for in two hit comedies about the nation's Oval Office. Rob Reiner directs The American President [Side A], starring Douglas as a widower chief executive whose poll numbers plummet when he falls for an environmental lobbyist (Annette Bening). Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dreyfuss and more top talents co-star in this nimble exploration of private romance in a public Presidency. And in a land where anybody can become President, anybody just did! Kline and Sigourney Weaver star in Dave [Side B], the wry Ivan Reitman-directed story of a lookalike who becomes a stand-in for the country's actual President. From coast to coast the votes are in: this double feature is a winner by a landslide!Format: DVD MOVIE

Professional Reviews

Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide 8 of 10
[Dave] Shades of Prisoner Of Zenda! U. S. president, incapacitated by stroke, is replaced by look-alike (and everyman) Kline, who proceeds to win over the press, public, and even the president's estranged wife (Weaver) in this amusing political comedy. Farfetched premise made believable by winning cast and cameos by celebrities, real reporters, and actual U. S. senators!

Washington Post 8 of 10
[American] In The American President, a frothy White House comedy from director Rob Reiner, affairs of state prevent two smitten public servants from attending to more pressing domestic issues. Reiner probably sees the film as a liberal wake-up call, but it is essentially an enjoyably starry-eyed romance about a widowed president (Michael Douglas) who is bowled over by a gorgeous lobbyist (Annette Bening)...The American President touches on all manner of [Washington] issues but illumines none of them. And while there are some engaging glimpses of the president's staff in action--Michael J. Fox (riffing on George Stephanopoulos), Martin Sheen (Mack McLarty) and David Paymer (Stanley Greenberg)--the film's principal pleasures lie in the president's pursuit of a first lady. After all, somebody's got to pick out the china. - Rita Kempley
