Review Inspired by real events, drama "Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma" ekes middling results from a fascinating storyline. Tale of a young gay man trying to reconstruct his identity after being left naked and beaten in a Montreal parking lot offers an intriguing mystery. But this latest feature from writer-helmer Denis Langlois ("L'Escorte") lacks the directorial vision or arresting lead turn that would lift it above telepic-level adequacy...Memory-flashes aside, the chronologically ordered tale is framed by the present-tense inquiry of Montreal criminologist-in-training Sylvie (Karyne Lemieux), who's decided to write her thesis paper about the "James Brighton" case. This device is OK, but pic needs a stronger cinematic style to convey the protag's ambiguities. Instead, the film (looking a tad dark and soft in 35mm transfer) is serviceable, but pedestrian...Puppyish Yugo-born Canadian lead Dukic's naif performance inadvertently flags "James" as a possible liar before -- and after -- we should suspect him of being one. Support perfs are solid, with Steven Turpin (who played an amnesiac in 2003 Canuck indie "Saved by the Belles") vivid in a key late support role...Production values are pro, though the package could have used more imagination. Closing title updates the real-life amnesiac's situation.

Review It should be noted at the outset that "Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma" does not conclude with the natural resolution the story seems designed for. Whether that helps or hurts the narrative is up to the individual viewer, but the logical payoff suggests the man who claims to be James Brighton finds out the truth about his life. That never happens, leaving the preceding 90 minutes something of an enigma itself...If the idea is to confuse the audience as much as James is confused, the story by director Denis Langolis excels beyond his wildest imagination...The more I think about it, the more I can justify leaving out or being "creative" with aspects of the story I«ve commented on. The daily, mundane activities aren«t of consequence; instead, the life changing events are worth noting. Dusan Dukic as James/Matthew more than holds his own, conveying an almost childlike sense of wonder at the world around him. The others actors aren«t on screen nearly long enough for us to get any grasp of what they bring to the movie. "Amnesia" barely slides into recommended territory with caveats, all of which are in the details. Create a world we believe is real instead of one you insist is real. Actions, as the saying goes, speak louder than words.
