Probably one of my best reads of 2008
This intriguing plot is set in eighteenth century England and Maryland, and follows Portland stonemason, Jack Easton, who is transported to the American colony as a convict after a wrongful conviction of murder. It is an atmospheric tale of betrayal and revenge and one which will grip you from start to finish. The author manages to bring the time alive through an exciting adventure story that has been extremely well researched. The characters are nicely developed and convincing, and you get drawn in to their dilemmas and heartaches as much as their hardships and trials. At the core of the novel, however, is Jack Easton's quest for revenge against the corrupt customs official who set him up. I will not give the game away, but will say that the concluding chapters will keep you on the edge of your chair. I was unable to put it down! A very good read, and one that I would heartily recommend.
