"Based on a true story and brought to life with stunning animation and the voices of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Hank Azaria, Christopher Lloyd and Angela Lansbury, Anastasia is an epic tale of breathtaking action and intrigue certain to captivate the entire family! A spellbinding mix of adventure, comedy, romance and music, this acclaimed animated spectacular tells the thrilling story of the lost Russian princess Anastasia and her incredible quest to find her true identity. When the shadow of revolution falls across Russia, Anastasia, the royal family's youngest daughter, barely escapes with her life. Years later, joined by a band of heroic companions, Anastasia must battle the evil Rasputin, his sidekick Bartok the bat and a host of ghostly minions in a headlong race to reach Paris, reclaim her rightful destiny...and solve the greatest mystery of the 20th century!"

"...enchanting... pure family entertainment.  Lisa Osborne, Boxoffice Magazine
"Two thumbs up!  Siskel & Ebert

Editor's Note
Based on the legend of the real-life daugher of the last Russian czar, ANASTASIA combines imaginative animation and lively songs to tell the story of a princess who escapes a horrible execution and mysteriously reappears after being thought dead. When a team of swindlers, Dimitri (John Cusack) and Vladimir (Kelsey Grammer), recruit Anya (Meg Ryan), a spunky amnesiac orphan, in their plot to defraud the Dowager Empress (Angela Lansbury) with a faux Romanov heir, little do they know their carefully coached fake is the real thing. But the resurgence of the long-lost Anastasia also attracts the attention of the scary Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd), who, with his hilarious sidekick, Bartok the bat (Hank Azaria), schemes to do in the last Romanov. Though much lighter (thankfully for children) than the 1956 Anatole Litvak-directed ANASTASIA adapted from Marcelle Maurette's play, this movie is still packed with thrills, chills, and romance. The first animated feature from 20th Century Fox, the film is directed by longtime collaborators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman.

TNT's Rough Cut 9 of 10
Don Bluth has finally got all his ducks in a row. After numerous failed attempts to compete with Disney, he's joined forces with Fox Animation Studios to create their first animated feature -- an adaptation of Arthur Laurent's 1956 screenplay starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner... You won't find too many factual elements in the film, but what Anastasia lacks in historical content, it makes up for in quality animation -- seamlessly blending computer-generated backgrounds with traditional techniques. Combined with a good musical score and an excellent cast (Meg Ryan as Anastasia, Christopher Lloyd as Rasputin), this film is the first non-Disney "classic" in years... - Demetrios Lambros

Boxoffice Magazine 8 of 10
This enchanting fairy-tale, the first release from Fox Animation Studios, is pure family entertainment. Set in 1916, it tells the possible story of Princess Anastasia, heir to the Russian Romanov dynasty, who, in this telling, survives a curse cast on her family by the evil sorcerer Rasputin (voiced by Christopher Lloyd)...Rasputin's sidekick, Bartok (voiced by Hank Azaria), the albino bat, is endowed with unwitting comic genius and a great sense of timing that takes the edge off some scenes that might be scary to younger viewers. He also gets lots of laughs from children and adults alike. In Anya, Fox has found a modern-day, spunky heroine. Precocious as a child, she grows up to become an independent, self-confident woman with a quick wit who delivers some great one-liners. There is also more chemistry between the two animated leads--Anya and Dimitri--than is apparent in many romantic clinches between actor and actress... - Lisa Osborne
