Annotation:
In Victorian London, Constance Barton becomes increasingly protective of her only daughter, the lovely little Angelica, and increasingly distrustful of her medical researcher husband, whose work involves cruel animal vivisections. Under the influence of a deceitful mystic named Anne Montague, Constance begins to suspect ghostly forces at work in her household and unnatural urges in her husband's character. Arthur Phillips unfolds the plot in four fiendishly clever sections, revealing twist after twist (not least the true identity of the novel's narrator), and making it extremely tricky to decipher who exactly is a villain or a hero--or why the Barton marriage turned so foul.

Praise
"A symphony of psychological complexity...Phillips juggles possibilities almost as adroitly as did Henry James in this novel's likely inspiration, THE TURN OF THE SCREW." (starred review)
01/01/2007
"What at first appears a rather glib ghost story predicated on Victorian clichés of sexual repression and patriarchal tyranny turns into a spectacular, ever-proliferating tale of mingled motives, psychological menace, and delicately told crises of appetite and loneliness."
