Anya, embarrassed by her Russian immigrant family and self-conscious about her body, has given up on fitting in at school but falling down a well and making friends with the ghost there just may be worse.
This humorous and heartfelt graphic novel not only involves a ghost story, but grapples with several classic coming-of-age themes, such as longing for popularity, low self-esteem, and endless family issues. Anya is mortified by her Russian immigrant family and works very hard to fit in at her American private school by shedding her accent and shunning her mother's home cooking. When she falls down a well and meets a ghost from 1918 named Emily, everything changes. When she's saved, Anya inadvertently takes Emily with her, and the ghost helps her make friends, get close to her crush, and even get test answers. At first, having a ghost as a best friend is fantastic, but soon, Anya discovers that something much more complex is at play. With pitch-perfect black-and-white artwork.

"Written and drawn by Russian American artist Vera Brosgol, ANYA'S GHOST is a beautifully rendered portrait of a zaftig young lass struggling to rid herself of her origins when everyone else wants to define her by it." - Susan Carpenter 06/19/2011

"A deliciously creepy page-turning gem...sure to haunt its reader long after the last past is turned--exquisitely eerie." 05/01/2011
