From the Publisher:
These stories are linked by the gone and not forgotten: former spouses, dead parents, missing children. Lynch creates a world in which people searching for connection and old comforts find them both near at hand and oddly out of reach.
Annotation:
Thomas Lynch, a second-generation undertaker from Milford, Michigan, presents his first collection of short stories, which center around the author's area of expertise--death and its diverse effects on the living. In "Catch and Release," an avid fisherman goes trout fishing with his father's ashes, while in "Bloodsport," a funeral director inexorably exaggerates his remorse over a murder victim. The title novella, "Apparition," is a character study of a minister named Adrian Littlefield, who is somewhat tormented by the dubious success he has achieved as a self-help author after his wife left him. All of Lynch's meticulous short fictions eloquently examine how the tangible objects and objectives of the present are infinitely more fleeting than the ethereal entities of our past.

Praise

"[Lynch] is a careful writer. He takes his time. He creates his characters thoroughly, with much detail and background (more background than foreground). In this way, he cares for his reader by taking the guesswork out of the fiction. He wants you to know exactly where you are in time and space. He is more interested in truth than speculation, substance than mystery. Suffering may be swift and deep, but Lynch does not linger on it. Where another writer might savor the drama, he washes it down with more life, more suffering." - Susan Salter Reynolds 02/14/2010

"[T]he stories and novellas here are gifts of precision, narratives with the poise to depict entire lives unstrung by the end of things....Lynch does not recoil from the gruesome facts of his trade or the insights they have allowed him, but he commands the light as well as the darkness. Nihilism is nowhere in these stories, and love is everywhere embraced." - William Giraldi 02/21/2010

"Thomas Lynch....has published three outstanding collections of poetry and three books of non-fiction....APPARITION is [his] first excursion into fiction and every bit as enjoyable as the books that precede it." - Cressida Connolly 02/01/2010
