Archives of War is a comprehensive three-volume series that sheds new light on some of the darkest moments of this milennium--from the trenches of World War I, through the global devastation of World War II, to the intensity of the Cold War. The program includes the 1925 silent film classic The Battle Of Ypres, set to an original score by Chicago composer Joy Yascone, and excerpts from German, Japanese and Soviet documentaries. It also provides a rare glimpse of people preparing for war, fighting, recovering from war's effects and celebrating its end. Volume 1--World War I And The Interwar Years includes the U.S. debut of The Battle Of Ypres, which chronicles three terrible World War I battles fought near the Belgian town of Ypres. This volume also contains material on the treatment of "war neurosis", the rise of Nazi power, the Spanish Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War. World War II--The Leaders documents the powerful men involved with the most destructive war in history--Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Emperor Hirohito, Franklin D Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin. The program features footage of their public appearances and reveals the public's reaction to their crucial roles in history. Volume 2--World War II--The Battles takes audiences from the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, to the atomic destruction in Japan in 1945. This installment shows footage of fighting on the Atlantic and Pacific fronts, the English fighting for their lives in the Battle of Britain, the German defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad, important U.S. naval victories in the Pacific and women factory workers building bombs on the home front. The Cold War vividly depicts the rise of atomic weapons and increased tension between the United States and the Soviet Union in the aftermath of World War II. Viewers witness GIs being exposed to atomic blasts, the arrest of Communist agents, Civil Defense drills, Senator Joe McCarthy, the Berlin Wall, the Bay Of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis and other important aspects of the Cold War. also features excerpts from Soviet documentaries on Red China, the nuclear arms race and the Soviet Army. Volume 3--Korea tells the story of the first "hot" conflict--from the invasion of South Korea by the North Korean Army on June 25, 1950, to the armistice that was signed three years later. It also includes material from the war's aftermath such as political protests in South Korea, the positioning of tactical atomic weapons on the Korean peninsula, and the resignation of South Korea's president. Other topics covered are the Inchon Landing, General MacArthur's resignation, air warfare, the retreat of the U.S. forces from Chosin reservoir, POW exchanges and the infamous Koje prison camp riots. Vietnam illustrates several phases of a conflict that lasted many years--from the French struggle against communist Viet Minh in the 1950's to the start of the Paris peace negotiations in 1968. France's war in Vietnam is well documented: air attacks, commando raids, land battles and the fall of Dien Bien Bhu. The program also covers early U.S. support of South Vietnam, the buildup of U.S. forces during the 1960's, bombing raids, riverine operations, naval air attacks and worldwide protests against the war, from Saigon to Stockholm.
