Customer Reviews of ASUS O!Play HDP-R1 HD Media Player
Easy to use6/30/2011
This is my first Media player and I don't have any problem with it. It is easy to use, just hook up and follow the interface. I tried on both HD TV and regular TV they both worked perfect. It works like DVD for skipping chapter or forward/backward with different speed and it even goes faster. I haven't tried the network when I do I will update. Note: you can use USB external hard drive on Sata input and it still works and runs fater.
Does what it says... ASUS11/2/2010
Easy to set up and use... ..works well with external hard drives... plays almost all the formats one can come across... picture quality is okay if you use a HDMI cable... ...tried hooking up my ipad... didn't work :(
Awsome Network Media Player10/18/2010
This is a very simple product to use. I would dare to say near plug-n-play. Setup your network shares in windows or linux and you are good to go. You can setup shortcuts (helps if you have to type login info for specific shares). It plays a TON more media files than this page or the box says it will. FLV and ISO (CD, DVD, BR, etc) are some of the best surprises to me. As of this post, firmware update is at version 1.3 which adds some internet content (Flicr, internet radio, web tv) and it looks like they will be adding more future functionality to legacy devices. With any luck, this thing will have YouTube and Hulu in the near future. The GUI is a bit generic, but it works. If you have all your music in one file, it lists is alphabeticly and starts with CAPS then goes to lower case which could get annoying (I fixed this by just organizing my music with folders by artist then by album). Over all, it's a very capable device and ASUS seems to be keeping this version of the device in the loop for future updates to add more functionality.
Mom Loves It10/18/2010
I already had used one before, and loved everything about it. No need to update the firmware, because it runs just fine out of the box. I bought it for my mom, because she has no cable or dish network, and she loves it! I plan on buying another one soon. It will play anything I throw at it. I spent hours looking over every single other media devices, and this is just the best there is.
Good unit, work well with all the video format9/29/2010
I purchased a Western Digital WDBAAL0000NBK-NESN WD TV Mini Media Player a while ago and I returened it the second day as most of the HD video format could not be played on it. The Asus one is so far the best one I have ever tried. It plays all the video format I have in my hard drive. We have owned it for over two weeks now, my wife and I are very happy with its performance. Good unit, worth the money you pay.
A truly wonderful media player!8/29/2010
I have two of these now, and I couldn't be happier! They come out with firmware updates often, and each one has improved the performance of the player. It's great to know that my product won't become obsolete due to lack of support. I've tried another media player and it didn't support even close to the same amount of codecs as this one, forcing me to use LPCM instead of RAW output, which makes a huge difference in the sound quality. If you can get one of these when they're running a rebate, it's a fantastic deal, although even at regular price, it's something I don't think any home media system should be without. There are other good media players out there, but I think for the price, you definitely get what you pay for and shouldn't be disappointed with the features of the Asus O!Play.
Great Media Player!6/9/2010
I was on the fence between this and the Western Digital HDTV. After seeing several reviews about the WD not playing DTS and numerous other problems, i took a leap to this unit. It has played everything I've thrown at it! Divx, Xvid, Blue Ray rips, 1080P, 720P, doesnt matter. Picture is spectacular on a Mitsubishi 65"!! I have a 1TB hard drive loaded with HD movies so I have tossed out all the useless DVD's and CD's now. Got rid of tons of clutter on the entertainment system in the process. Easy HDMI hookup and 2 usb/e-sata ports for incoming files. All you torrent downloaders out there, make life easy and get one of these :)
great media player3/5/2010
Its a great media player with access to on-line media also. I could now sit back and watch movies, listen music from my external HDD connected to it and also the Internet Radio is pretty good with lot of channels as per my choice. So far no problems with this product. Need to improve Internet TV channels as per region.
I have never writen a review before, but i had to do this one. First of all i ordered the oplay from buy.com Sunday night, and received it Tuesday (today). I must say buy.com has the fastest shipping i ever experience. Now to the product it was simple to setup and navigate. It played every media i owned off the bat ( rmbv, mkv, avi, mp4, divx, mp3) just to name a few. It came installed with update 1.07. Now to picture quality it was very good, but not as excelent as my ps3. The ps3 picture quality is better in my oppinion much sharper and cleaner. For the price though it is pretty good. The remote needs line of sight to work though, so make sure nothing is in its way. One drawback i found was that when i attach my 1.5 tb hardrive it took some time to identify the files and load them, unlike the ps3 which was much faster. I am very pleased so for, i bought it because i had a lot of old kung fu movies which were rmbv files and had subtitles. It played my files and subtitles without any problem. What i would recommed to anyone using this is to use smaller and faster external hardrive with this product, nothing over a 1tb. Their is also some problem with the sound dropping out, but i have read that it can be fixed with the latest firmware download. So with all said i would recommend this for people with low budget, and who has a lot of online downloaded files to play. Hope this helps someone considering to buy one.
Don't even hesitate!1/11/2010
This media player will solve all of your streaming needs when it comes to media of any type that might be stored on your network. The media player functions just like another networked device, complete with security options that can be saved to a shortcut that allow the media player to logon to the network. From there, you can browse various folders and play anything that's accessible to your network. I am using this in conjunction with an HP MediaSmart server and I couldn't be more happy. All known video and audio formats have been decoded and reproduced in perfect quality, and I've streamed everything from 480p up to 1080p resolutions without a hiccup (over a gigabit wired connection). Seriously, this IS the device to have if you want to stream network content. Ok, now for MINOR pet peeves: 1) When previewing movies, the scrolling of titles is a lot slower, because the movie actually loads and starts playing, so to prevent that you need to quickly scroll past the titles, because once you stop, there's a delay as it tries to preview the movie. I ended up disabling that feature and the menus are a lot zippier. 2) As most people who have a network media configuration do, I have set up my music, videos, and photos in a large share directory for each, it would be VERY useful to have a default directory that each mode went to when you selected it, to save time moving throughout the directory structures to get to what you want. Again, MINOR pet peeves! This device is outstanding and I'm extremely happy I stumbled upon it while purchasing my home server!
I only use this for movie playbacks, so if you're interested in music I can't help you. This is a great player. Networked easy. Found PCs on network no problem. Hooked a USB drive to it. Only issue, why I bumped it down one on ease, Does not log into Windows 7 boxes without some work. Asus support is useless here. Do a Google search to find o!play and Windows 7. Post out there mentions registry change and logging in as root. Was a pain and Asus needs to address. Once running no problems with playback. Preview mode is great help. Even plays ISO images.
Great player for networked/portable drive media12/22/2009
I have used this player as well as the Western Digital WDTV (the original, not the Live). Asus was a great value because of network support. I also prefer the remote control on the Asus over the WDTV... more buttons mean fewer clicks to get where you want to go. I rate the Ease of Use as a 4 only because there is a bit of work involved to get this working with a networked drive. But anybody who has a home network with shared folders should be able to do it in 10 minutes or less. The only other shortcoming I can report is that there is no way to view thumbnail images associated with a movie collection. Instead you get a preview window that starts playing the movie as you browse (you can disable this through options.) But I still recommend this player. I had no issues with file compatibility; in fact it played some files that the original WD TV would not play, like the .MOV files I created with my panasonic digital camera.
Ease of installation and using... Had this for over two weeks and no hangs or reboots, works perfect. I have all kinds of video formats and so far no problems. I would recommend this to all! THANKS ASUS!!!!
