Author Bio
John Gardner
Gardner was born on a dairy farm in rural western New York State. His mother was an English teacher. His brother died in an accident on the farm when Gardner was 12; he considered himself responsible, and much of his fiction is concerned with the problem of guilt. He attended Washington University, followed by graduate school at the University of Iowa. All his life, he was a teacher of medieval literature and of writing. His third novel, GRENDEL, brought him to the attention of critics and the public. Much of his work uses traditional forms and ideas, juxtaposing them to situations in modern life. His controversial critical broadside, ON MORAL FICTION (1978), earned him a reputation as a morally dogmatic prig, and his fiction was less well-received after its publication. He died in a motorcycle accident, leaving behind several works in progress, as well as the posthumous THE ART OF FICTION, a charming and insightful book of advice and observations on writing.
