Bakugan Battle Brawlers for the Nintendo DS is an interesting game. The outcome of the battle is in the hands of the DS stylus. G-Power does play somewhat of a factor in there though. The part that makes the Story Mode interesting is you get to be thrown in the rankings with the brawlers from Bakugan: Season 1.

Review Collectible battle animals-robots-demons-creatures-cards will never cease to stop being produced it seems, and each of them is almost always carried over to multiple media types. Pokemon is obviously the biggest example of this, but Bakugan has been picking up steam as of late...In the actual real-world game, players place large, magnetic cards on a playing surface and then attempt to roll plastic balls onto them. These balls are the Bakugan and magnetically pop open into their beast form when rolled on top of a card. Then by way of adding up various G-Power cards and through other rules, a winner in each battle is determined and that player wins a card. Once a certain number of cards are won, that player is the overall winner of the game. There's more to it than that, but that's the basic idea...The videogame take on the franchise, Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, puts players in control of a customized character that they attempt to take to the Ultimate Battle Tournament. Between matches (which include both tournaments and one-off battles at a park, akin to an arcade mode), you can buy new Bakugan, upgrade them, purchase G-Power cards and manage your decks for your next fight...Now, while the way the mechanics play out aren't done in the way that I would have liked to have seen them, fans of the Bakugan franchise who want to take everything that comes with it on the road may find something to like. All of the elements are here - there's collecting, vicious monsters of varying types and lots of battles to be had. Support for up to four players is here as well, though it's a simple setup and isn't online or anything of that sort. I don't think it'll completely take fans away from the card game, but it might be entertaining for a weekend or two...Bakugan: Battle Brawlers seems to do things mostly right on paper, though the actual gameplay offers too much build-up to each fight and not enough in the actual battle department. It may serve as a distraction for Bakugan fans for a bit, but it won't replace the real-world game anytime soon.

Review Bakugan Battle Brawlers was an anime in Japan that managed to pick up enough of a following to merit a localized U.S. release in 2008. Along with that came a tabletop game, a hybrid of card games like Pokemon and miniatures like HeroClix. It's a fairly unique game, but I used those two as examples purely to illustrate the title's use of cards and miniatures, not because they play in an identical fashion. The toys and game have gained quite a bit of popularity lately. I've seen the local toy aisles packed to the brim with Bakugan merchandise, from card packs to figures, and there have even been little carrying accessories and shooters to propel the ball-shaped Bakugan figures around the playing field. My girlfriend's nephew recently became a pretty big fan of the show and the game, so I've had a little hands-on experience with how the game works...If you were already a fan of the Bakugan anime and tabletop game, then you'd find something to enjoy in Bakugan Battle Brawlers. The controls are easy enough to get into and simple enough to pick up and play. Having some understanding of the basic gameplay from the tabletop game will help you get quickly acclimated to the rules. There's enough variance between the video game and the tabletop game to make it worth checking out. However, if you're an older gamer like myself and you're not already invested in the franchise in some way, there's just not enough depth to the Bakugan Battle Brawlers gameplay to keep you involved beyond the first couple of hours. The game doesn't evolve much after you master the basics, and while the addition of items and obstacles in the arena is unique to the video game, it's still really easy to overpower the CPU and finish the title in a short amount of time. This is definitely more geared toward the kids and core fan base than someone like me, so if you're not already a fan, you can safely skip this title without missing anything.

Review Before playing Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, I had no idea what Bakugan was. I then learnt what it was and tried to forget all about it. I'm not a fan of generic anime card games. I enjoyed Pokemon as a kid more for the TV show and games than the "collecting all the cards" business, I just never got anything out of it. Bakugan is pretty much exactly the same except you get to throw special marbles at the cards. Sound exciting? You might like this game. Sounds like your idea of hell? Stay as far away from this as possible...The Bakugan in the title are small marble sized balls that, when touched, the magnetic "Gate Cards" pop open to reveal the Bakugan inside. The aim of the game is to use your Bakugan to fight for the right to own the Gate Card. The first person to gain three Gate Cards is the winner. There are some more rules to it but, in all honesty, I was too bored to care.To fight for the Gate Cards each Bakugan has a separate amount of attack to each one. Depending on what the attributes of the Gate Card your Bakugan landed on, the card itself can help to raise the attack rating of your specific Bakugan...Now Productions definitely know their fan base. Unfortunately for them, it's definitely not people like me. Fans of the Bakugan series can find a lot to love here. Characters from the series pop up here and there and it stays pretty faithful to the series. If I've learnt one thing from this game however, is that I'm too old for this stuff. The market is pretty saturated with all these collect 'em all games and it's just become a sea of crap. Bakugan: Battle Brawlers is yet another addition to this sea of crap, floating along like a dead fish, rent if you really have to.
