| For use in schools and libraries only. Mann deals with the loss of his brother in this heartbreaking novel about inner-city violence. |
|
From the Publisher:
A teenage boy must face the harsh realities of inner city life, a disintegrating family, and destructive temptations as he struggles to find his identity as a young man. |
Annotation:
The focus of this painful, moving young adult novel is the agony of losing people to senseless violence, and the destruction that can follow. Part of an African American family torn apart by sorrow, 13-year-old Mann stills grieves over the terrible gunning down of his little brother, Jason, two years earlier. Though he's an artistic, sensitive boy with a strong attachment to horses, Mann and his best friend, Kee-lee, descend into the worst their poor neighborhood has to offer. In desperation, Mann's taciturn father creates his own take on an African rite of adulthood, and deposits the two boys in woods hours away, forcing them to make their way home. However, this backfires, and could be the complete un-doing of Mann altogether.
