Annotation:
Only in his early 50s and at the height of his career, Dagoberto Gilb suffered a stroke. This stand-up collection of short fiction bears the impact of that life-changing event, while also touching on themes and contentions that have defined Gilb's writing since his breakout publication THE MAGIC OF BLOOD. The first story in BEFORE THE END, AFTER THE BEGINNING deals straightforwardly with Gilb's recent experiences. The protagonist uses no capitalization because of loss of function in his hands from a stroke. He feels frustrated by assumptions that people make about him--speaking to him in Spanish, although he was born and raised in the U.S., among other things. Most of the characters struggle to some degree with their identity--whether due to cultural pressures or their age. In some stories, Gilb looks into the joys and sorrows of childhood, such as in "His Birthday." But all the characters, no matter how old, are in the middle of their lives--before the end, after the beginning.

Praise

"BEFORE THE END, AFTER THE BEGINNING is a collection of stories written mostly after the stroke, and it serves as a reckoning....[Gilb is also just] telling good stories: of men who are both Mexican and American, who are cultured and uncouth, who look at wealth from the outside and, occasionally, from within. A student may make something of himself; a poor young father might fall through the cracks; an older man might discover something new. They are formed by forces outside themselves, but they are not finished yet." - Carolyn Kellogg 10/30/2011

"Gilb may be describing what it is like to live through a stroke, but he has also discovered an appropriate symbol of the eternal no man's land of the Chicano in America." - Bridget Kevane 11/20/2011

"[Gilb is]...simply telling good stories: of men who are both Mexican and American, who are cultured and uncouth, who look at wealth from the outside and, occasionally, from within." - Carolyn Kellogg 10/30/2011
