Muze PNote Most indie rock bands with a serious Beach Boys jones usually get the band's sunny confection element, but fail when it comes to nailing the unique character of the Wilson harmonies. Not the Besnard Lakes, whose worn-on-the-sleeve Wilson adoration is backed up by a quartet of vocalists who can sing and harmonize very well and very high (no small accomplishment). On THE BESNARD LAKES ARE THE DARK HORSE, the Montreal band blends their love with a disjointed riffs-and-soundscape approach that starts with an epic pretense and succeeds in execution. The results are a thrill, simultaneously familiar and wholly new.

Artist Overview

Jace Lasek (vocals, guitar) and Olga Goreas (vocals, bass) formed the Besnard Lakes in 2001. The married couple recorded nearly all of The Besnard Lakes, Vol.1 during down time at their Montreal studio, then self-released the result in 2003. After they signed to the venerable dream pop indie label Jagjaguwar, the band released their second album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, in 2007 and followed it up with The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night in 2010. 2011 saw the band embark on a couple of different soundtracking projects, including Mark Ruffalo's Sympathy for Delicious and the multimedia documentary Welcome to Pine Point. During that same year they began sessions for what became 2013's Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO. ~ Stewart Mason

Professional Reviews

No Depression (p.92)
- "Most devastating of all is, appropriately, 'Devastation', a hyper-heavy slab of beautifully epic post-prog."
