I was delighted when I saw HD has issued a set of 4 movies into this Best of HD DVD - Action and I at last decided to buy it, although with difficulty as one of them been bought earlier. However, all of them are superb with picture quality especially Troy which I like most, particularly the battle scene was very cleared and the sound is well mixed and dimensional. Read More

Product Overview

Get ready for action, adventure, and excitement with The Best of HD-DVD: Action! This incredible collection includes some of your favorite films of all time in stunning high definition: TROY: DIRECTOR'S CUT, BLOOD DIAMOND, ALEXANDER REVISITED: THE FINAL CUT, and WYATT EARP!

TROY: Director Wolfgang Petersen enlarges his exciting epic with over 30 minutes of previously unseen footage drawing you deeper into the heat of battle and the heated lives of his complex characters. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom star.

BLOOD DIAMOND: An ex-mercenary turned smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio). A Mende fisherman (Djimon Hounsou). Amid Sierra Leone's exploding 1999 civil war, these men join for two desperate missions: recovering a rare pink diamond and rescuing the fisherman's son, conscripted as a child soldier into the brutal rebel forces.

ALEXANDER REVISITED: Oliver Stone incorporates over 30 minutes never shown anywhere and reshapes his saga of the world's greatest warrior (Colin Farrell) into a richer, more satisfying and audacious portrait from curious boyhood to mature conqueror.

WYATT EARP: Kevin Costner plays the lawman who became a myth in an epic, action-filled saga co-starring Gene Hackman as Wyatt's iron-willed father and Dennis Quaid as Earp's deadly best friend Doc Holiday.

Review [Troy] Some men buy sports cars when they're about to turn 40. Brad Pitt got buff--so he could do an action picture while he was still able. So if he struts his stuff in Troy, he's to be forgiven--and not just because he looks pretty darned good for his age, even during all those gratuitous nude scenes...Pitt doesn't have the timeless look that would make him as believably ancient as Peter O'Toole, who plays the sensitive and sagely King Priam of Troy, or Brian Cox, who blusters about as the impetuous Agamemnon...But we can forgive him because, as in Gladiator, there are some pretty intense and stylish battle scenes that hold our attention...Yes, there's blood. Lots of blood and lots of action and, surprisingly, for an epic, not enough quiet or introspective moments...Those are the biggest flaws of this film, in addition to the occasional line meant to carry mythic weight that instead comes across as slightly cheesy...The strengths are Petersen's direction, the special effects, and the cast's performances.

Review [Blood] There are a lot of reasons to be enthralled by Blood Diamond, Edward Zwick's new action-drama-with-a-conscience: the deeply disturbing story he tells, for one, about how American consumer demand for diamonds and European colonialism drive and support horrifying civil strife in impoverished Africa is one that comparatively few people are aware of, and will be appalled to learn...probably the most stunning aspect of the film is Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Archer...Much of the credit for Archer's force and integrity as a character -- even if as a man, his integrity is questionable -- is down to Dicaprio: this is his arrival as a genuinely grownup actor, even more so than his powerful performance in The Departed, earlier this year...you believe DiCaprio: he doesn't look like an actor having a lark playing a bad guy. He looks and sounds and feels like the real deal.

Review [Wyatt] When it comes to gun slinging, tobacco spittin' cowboys, Kevin Costner is our generation's equivalent to John Wayne (keep in mind I said equivalent, not equal). So far Costner has been featured in such westerns as Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado, the Oscar winning Dances With Wolves..., 2003's Open Range, and his second western with Kasdan, the 1994 flop Wyatt Earp...Wyatt Earp had the unfortunate luck of being released only a short while after the beloved Tombstone, released in 1993. Like Tombstone, Wyatt Earp deals with lawman Wyatt Earp's (Kurt Russell) legendary gunfight at the OK Corral alongside sickly Doc Holiday (played by Val Kilmer). While Tombstone was a tight, taut action movie with memorable characters, Wyatt Earp is a lumbering, sometimes pretentious melodrama that seems unsure of just who Wyatt was...Wyatt Earp is not what I'd consider a perfect western. Though there are a few scattered good things going on in the film, the fact remains that it's a bit too slow and far too long for my personal tastes.

Review [Alexander] When the mighty fall, it is from a greater height. So it was with Alexander the Great, and so it is with Oliver Stone's "Alexander." Here is an ambitious and sincere film that fails to find a focus for its elusive subject. Stone is fascinated by two aspects of Alexander: his pan-nationalism and his pan-sexualism. He shows him trying to unite many peoples under one throne while remaining equally inclusive with his choices of lovers...I have always admired Oliver Stone's courage in taking on big, challenging films, and his gift for marrying action and ideas. "Alexander" is not a success, but it is ambitious and risky, and incapable of the inanities of "Troy."
