Product Overview

Sepetys presents a powerful and haunting novel based on a little-known real-life event in history. In terrifying detail, Ruta Sepetys re-creates a World War II coming of all all too timely today. "Between Shades of Gray" is a document long overdue.--Newbery Medalist Richard Peck.

Praise
"Sepetys' flowing prose gently carries readers through the crushing tragedy of this tale that needs telling."
"[A] superb though grueling novel for readers over the age of 13...Ms. Sepetys's prose is wonderfully uncluttered and sometimes beautiful, but she does not flinch from depicting Soviet cruelties, and that makes some passages rather harrowing....BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY and the other books in this tiny but perhaps widening historical niche are worth a young reader's time not just because they move or uplift (which they do). These volumes also give children the opportunity to develop as clear and educated an opinion about communism as they will have already formed about Nazism. And that's something worth having."
"[A] heart-wrenching debut novel...."
"...Lina recounts her story with a straightforward clarity that trusts readers to summon images of starvation, disease and death, and grounds them in a reality young adults can understand."
From the Publisher
Annotation This intense, moving historical young adult novel focuses on Stalin's forced labor atrocities during and after WWII by following the gripping story of 15-year-old Lina, a Lithuanian girl. It's 1941, and Lina is a gifted artist with a special crush, just a regular teen girl. She has a wonderful family life, and has no idea what it means when Soviet soldiers come crashing into her home. Soon, she's sent on a harrowing train ride with her mother and brother to Siberia to endure forced labor in the beet fields. Bitter cold, little safety, and terrible decisions create a new life for the family. Lina copes by documenting the experience through drawings, hoping that somehow word will reach her father, who is in another camp. The only other source of solace is Andrius, a boy who Lina befriends. Steeped in history, this story shares a side of WWII history that is rarely focused on in American classrooms.
Editors Note In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina, her mother, and brother are pulled from their Lithuanian home by Soviet guards and sent to Siberia, where her father is sentenced to death in a prison camp while she fights for her life, vowing to honor her family and the thousands like hers by burying her story in a jar on Lithuanian soil. Based on the author's family, includes a historical note.
