Review Don't be put off by its grandiose title--Beyond the Gates of Splendor is an engrossing, well-crafted documentary about a horrific event that resulted in an extraordinary transformation of an entire people. It's the amazing, little-known story of five young American missionaries (Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, and Pete Fleming) who, in the early 1950s, moved with their families to work in the jungles of Ecuador. But several years later, the very people they were trying to help, the Waodani Indians, savagely murdered these devout men as the result of a misconstrued tribal lie. However, it's what happened in the aftermath of these killings that makes this documentary so watchable. Jim Elliot's wife, Elisabeth, and Nate Saint's sister, Rachel--keeping their faith forefront--went on to forge an intensely close relationship with the ferocious Waodani, which eventually saved the tribe from self-extinction.

Review "Like Hotel Rwanda before it, Beyond the Gates is based on a real incident and hopes to use that incident as a prism through which to view the 1994 genocide in which Hutu militias murdered hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus while the world sat back and did nothing. And like Hotel Rwanda, this depressing if worthy drama can only really scratch the surface of a tragedy that remains unfathomable both for its savagery and for the sheer indifference of the outside world...Hurt is terrific as a good man in spiritual turmoil who nevertheless sticks to his vocation, doing Christ's work even if he feels utterly abandoned. Dancy is also excellent as a callow young man forced into maturity overnight. Yet one cannot help thinking that this tragedy happened to Rwandans, so the story ought properly to be about them. That it is not is frustrating, so that even as the drama reaches its horrific and heartrending climax, there is the feeling of a story only half told."
