Product Overview

"Rife with bloody gore and funny gags" (Sam Adams, Los Angeles Times) Black Sheep is a gruesomely twisted horror/comedy about mutant flesh-eating sheep run amok in rural New Zealand. When sheep-aphobic Henry returns to sell his share of the family farm, he finds his brother has been genetically altering animals. The resulting monsters go on a murderous rampage, and it's up to Henry to stop them. With frighteningly grotesque effects courtesy of Peter Jackson's WETA workshop, Black Sheep is a frenzy of severed limbs and manic mutton definitely "not for the weak of stomach" (Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News).

Review Musicvid helmer Jonathan King turns New Zealand's fleecy export into mutant carnivores in endearingly amusing horror pic, "Black Sheep." With plenty of knowing winks directed at the Kiwi predilection for their ovine friends, the pic has plenty of laffs, helped along by master f/x from WETA Workshop...Influenced by comic horror picsfrom "Evil Dead" to homegrown fare including Peter Jackson's early work, "Black Sheep" wisely doesn't try to dress up mutton as anything other than mutton. A scene of Henry and cohorts carefully walking away from the farmhouse is obviously inspired by "The Birds," but King doesn't push the parallels and is content to keep tongue firmly in cheek, as Dr. Rush's Dr. Moreau-like experiments turn cuddly creatures into killer zombies...Script is clever enough to keep an essentially one-note joke running throughout, and even stale moments offer groan-worthy humor ("The sheep are revolting"). Visuals are handsome, with King keen on situating the action in a typically Kiwi sylvan setting...WETA Workshop, lauded for its work on "The Lord of the Rings," does a bang-up job with the models, and King uses a fast, shaky handheld camera when needed to cover a multitude of possible imperfections.

Review Like its influences (specifically the original The Evil Dead and Peter Jackson's Dead Alive), Black Sheep is a horror movie that isn't particularly scary--it owes more to Jerry Lewis and Buster Keaton than it does to George Romero. Its gore is as graphic as the violence in Hostel: Part II, but the different context and sensibility create completely different effects; the escalating gore generates laughs, not shivers, as the gooey sheep attacks work the same way as the increasingly vulgar comic set pieces in a Farrelly Brothers movie...its goofy charm is completely infectious. With this first feature, King shows that he knows exactly how to place his camera to emphasize the laughs; he's especially brilliant at juxtaposing the sheep against the lush New Zealand landscape in shots that attain a kind of ridiculous mythic grandeur. The movie is a less effective when it comes to its attempts at verbal satire, particularly in the material involving the environmentalists, but the swift pacing overcomes this problem by inserting sheep attacks at regular intervals. Black Sheep isn't the kind of film that stays with you, but it delivers exactly what it promises: it's a stylish, thoroughly entertaining summer monster movie.
